The Value of Art at Aucocisco…
Those of you who are familiar with our school, are aware that we value the arts. We have had a long standing partnership with Sarah Boyden, our visiting artist, who inspires students to discover their talents. We augment our curriculum in other subjects by adding hands-on art projects. Our students have access to music lessons with Eric Ambrose, a certified music teacher, and our school social worker, DJ Landry is an expressive arts therapist who leads summer enrichment programming.
There’s a reason behind our passion for creative expression– the arts can play a major role in helping students with learning disabilities rediscover their love of learning.
This past February, the Freeport Community Library hosted the first "TINY ART SHOW". It was a great opportunity for Aucocisco students to participate alongside the local community to create unique pieces of art. Our students enjoyed a free choice of content and medium for their artwork, which included drawing, painting, collage, photography, and sculpture on the 3" x 3" canvases provided by the library.
Nearly 300 community members submitted entries to the art show, and all were displayed throughout February. Visitors were invited to view the collection and vote for their top 3 favorites, which received a golden duck sticker. Of the thirty-three golden ducks awarded, four belonged to Aucocisco students!
With our new school van we were able to coordinate field trips to the library to give the students a chance to see their artwork on display. They were delighted to find their work elevated on tiny easels with accompanying tent cards. The students thoughtfully regarded the many other entries, and we all left feeling inspired!
April Vacation Camps
Did you know that our vacation enrichment program is open to both students and non-students? This April we are featuring art and music camps. Enrollments are limited to a maximum of eight students per program, ensuring that students can get lots of individualized attention while also having the opportunity to meet new friends.
